Ripley’s Aquariums Earns High Marks on TripAdvisor.com

Ripley Entertainment Inc. has received top honors on TripAdvisor’s list of the nation’s Top 10 Aquariums.

Coming in at #1 was Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, located in Gatlinburg, TN and #4 went to Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach.

The Myrtle Beach location is at Broadway at the Beach and is a state of the art, 87,000 square foot $40 million aquarium experience. One of the features is a 750,000 gallon tank known as Dangerous Reef, where visitors move under and alongside the tank on a 330 foot moving glidepath surrounded by several types of sharks and additional marine life. Ray Bay is another popular spot in the aquarium where guests can touch a variety of rays. There are dive shows, and dozens of additional exhibits that the whole family will enjoy. North Myrtle Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Street Festival

This Saturday, March 22nd 2008, North Myrtle Beach will hold the 20th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Street Festival on Main Street.

The parade, which starts at 9AM, is just the beginning of a fun packed day of street performers, two stages of live entertainment, great food and plenty of games for the little ones. A section of arts and crafts vendors will offer a variety of unique items.

Spirit Airlines Adds Direct Flights Between Orlando & Myrtle Beach

It’s getting easier to get to Myrtle Beach. Spirit Airlines recently announced direct service between Myrtle Beach and Orlando. This effectively links the top two leading vacation destinations which will be great for Orlando area residents, who may be looking for a vacation of their own during their peak visitor times, like spring break and winter recess. While Orlando is typically packed during those times, Myrtle Beach has plenty to offer including peace and relaxation in an un-crowded atmosphere. Service begins on June 12th.

This comes on the heels of Southern Skyways announcing new direct service to Myrtle Beach from The Tri-Cities, TN., Bridgeport, and Charleston WV., Wilkes-Barre – Scranton, PA., Akron-Canton and Dayton, OH as well as Rockford, IL.

Myrtle Beach Golf Tips – Instructional Videos

I have been here in Myrtle Beach for about six months now and everyone is asking me if I play golf. More and more, I am yearning to learn and play. Coming from Long Island where most courses are located on private country clubs, I never made it further than the Pitch n’ Putt at Jones Beach, where the goal was to hit people rather than hit the green.

So now that I live in Myrtle Beach year round and am just minutes from dozens of courses, I am determined to learn and play golf this year. Instead of learning as I go, I was looking for a place to take lessons and came across a great series of video golf tips worth sharing from Bobby McCrimmon, director of instruction at Direct Approach Golf School in Pawleys Island, S.C. There is a nice series of instructional videos ranging from the “proper grip” to the “putting stroke.”

2008 Can Am – Canadian American Days in Myrtle Beach

The 2008 Annual Canadian-American Days in Myrtle Beach are quickly approaching. This week long event will take place March 8th – March 16th, 2008 and will feature events across the entire Grand Strand. Signifying the end of winter and getting the spring season rolling, this year’s festival looks like the largest ever.

Here is just a small sampling of some of the scheduled events:

March 12th - The 14th Annual South Strand Wildlife and History Day, 10:00AM – 3:00PM – Free at Huntington State Park – Atalaya Castle. Events during this celebration include the Can-Am Little Olympics at 10:00 AM which will have beach games for children aged 3-12. There is also a 1:00pm kite festival with free kites for the first 300 participants age 15 or under.
March 13th - Conway Loves Canadians and Americans Day, 9:30 AM – 4 PM with events scheduled throughout the Conway area including glass blowing demonstrations, guided walking tours, theatrical production and 30 minute river tours for $5.
March 14th - 2008 Run to the Sun Car Show – All day and free of charge by the Pee Dee Street Rodders. Located at Hard Rock Theme Park.
March 15th - 10th Annual Can-Am Junior Golf Team Matches, 8:00 AM at Wachesaw Plantation.
March 15th - St Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, Parade at 9:00 AM followed by an all day festival beginning at 11:00 AM on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach.
March 15th - 8 PM Fireworks at Broadway at the Beach.
March 16th - Hear the music of the Myrtle Beach Pipe Band, 4:00PM at Broadway at the Beach.

Myrtle Beach Fishing Report for 2/11/08 – 2/17/08

Grand Strand

Spottail Bass: Fair. Spottail bass have slowed down from earlier this winter but some are still being caught. Try grubs, live mud minnows, and Mirrolures in creeks and around oyster beds. Try the creeks behind Pawley’s Island and further south.
Trout: Fair. The trout fishing is beginning to pick back up again. Use Mirrolures or Gulp shrimp and fish deep areas.
Bottom Fish: Good. Boats report nice catches of black sea bass, grouper, and snapper from the Parking Lot (25 miles offshore) on out.
Flounder: Fair to Good. A surprising flounder bite for decent sized flounder has emerged and fishermen are catching fish up the creeks in very deep holes. These are fish that have not gone offshore for winter. Use live mud minnows worked across the bottom.

Little River

Striped Bass: Good. Target striper in the ICW using grubs and artificial shrimp.
Spottail Bass: Fair. Try fishing with live minnows or artificials in ICW areas.
Trout: Very good. The trout bite is really improving and lots of 3 to 5 pound fish are being taken. Fish in the ICW with grubs and artificial shrimp. Berkeley Gulp baits have been particularly effective.
Bottom Fish: Good. Boats are doing well fishing for black sea bass, grouper and snapper when they can get out. Use cut squid.

Getting you in the Summer Vacation Frame of Mind

The school season is more than halfway over and spring is just around the corner. Lets take the chill out of the air and start thinking about summer and vacation. What better way to do it than watching an awesome video of someone’s 2007 vacation to Myrtle Beach? Posted on YouTube by coasterfreak11892, this video set to music is over 8 minutes long and shows some of the area’s great attractions.

The opening few minutes begin with rides and coasters at Family Kingdom – the Myrtle Beach area’s oceanfront amusement park, followed by some mini golf, waterpark fun at Myrtle Waves, parasailing, a visit to Hard Rock Cafe at Broadway at the Beach, a stop at Hard Rock Park (opening in May of 2008) with a look at the Led Zeppelin coaster and much more.

February Events in the Myrtle Beach Area

February has become quite busy and there are plenty of events going on in the Myrtle Beach area through the rest of the month. While we can not list them all, here are a few highlights:

2/13 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM: May the Forest be with You! – Held at Myrtle Beach State Park, take a one mile walk through the maritime forest and learn more about the plants and animals that call it home. $5 per person with free park admission.

2/14 through 2/17 – BI-LO Myrtle Beach Marathon – A full schedule of events including the full marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, bicycle ride, 5k and Fun Run & Party.

2/16 @ 8PM – Fireworks Spectacular – Fireworks over the lake, Broadway at the Beach.

2/17 from 2:00PM – 9:00PM – Miss Myrtle Beach and Miss Paradise Resort Scholarship Pageant - Held at the Carolina Opry, teen pageant runs from 2-5PM with miss pageant from 6-9PM.

2/23 from 10:00AM – 11:30AM – Polar Plunge – Organized by the North Myrtle Beach Department of Parks and Recreation, get a morning jolt of fun for $5 per person. Come in costume for a chance to win prizes.

2/23 from 12:00PM – 5PM – Winter Parrot Head Festival – Organized by La Belle Amie Vineyard, enjoy wine tasting, a vineyard tour at 2:30PM, live music and great food. Admission is $8 with those over 80 or under 18 free. Located just west of the North Myrtle Beach Middle School at Hwy 90 and St Joseph Rd.
